2. Materials and methods The bacteria were grown and their DNA labelled with 3 H-thymidine in minimal medium as described by Cramp and Watkins (1970). The labelling was for one and a half divisions followed by a chase in fresh medium with cold thymidine over a quarter of a division. The cells were harvested by centrifugation and finally resuspended in 0. 15 M sodium chloride. The cells were cooled to ice temperature before ultrasound irradiation (insonation).
