Chi-Pu depot of Taoyuan International airport MRT system is under construction. River, a cutoff system is required to be designed underneath the flood wall to prevent uplift and piping caused by seepage flow from the adjacent Shin-Jie river. Due to large size cobbles found in the subsurface soil deposit (in-situ soil deposit is classified as GP-GM), the typical cast-in-place cutoff wall or cement deep soil mixing will be very difficult. To overcome such difficulties, an alternative design of widen and shallow cutoff trench combining with mixed-in-place soil cement is proposed. Based on test results, two benefits should be pointed out for the alternative design. First, the soil gains higher strength through the cementitious bonding by adding cement. Second, the permeability was reduced from k = 3.58 × 10-5 cm/sec to k = 1.03 × 10-7cm/sec by adding fly ash. The proposed mix design for cement content is 7 ,and fly ash content is 15%. Simultaneously, the cost for alternative design is significantly lower than the original designs.
