In recent years there has been renewed interest in high -frequency acoustics, defined here as roughly the 5-50 kHz band. This band has historically included torpedo frequencies; however, recent research in acoustic communications, target scattering, HF tomography, and marine mammals has also rekindled interests. The Makai Experiment (“Makai” is Hawaian for “toward the sea”) was designed to bring together a number of researchers with interests in this area, sharing acoustic sources, receivers, and environmental sensors. It was conducted in late September of 2005 off the coast of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. Various papers in this volume discuss results from the Makai Experiment. Here as an introduction, we present an overview of the experiment and highlights of the results.
