So far only two neutral binary iodine-nitrogen compounds have been described, which as a result of the very labile IN bond ['] and the associated thermodynamic instability are both explosive: NI,['](or NI,. NH,[31) and Our attempts at the synthesis of the" I,]' ion analogous to [NCI,]+['I have so far been unsuccessful.['I We report here, the preparation and characterization starting from iodoazide, of the first binary iodine-nitrogen cation. The reaction of iodoazide freshly prepared from silver azide and iodine in CFC1,(RI 1) with I,/SbF,(intermediate formation of"[I][SbF,]", see ref.[6]) leads to the formation of a [12N3]+ salt [Eq.(a)].
