Saline, ether and alcoholic prepns. of skin scrapings, hair, cerumen and nails were studied for their bactericidal action on streptococci and other organisms. The action was greater with a low pH. Ether extracts of skin, hair, etc. of several persons, with one exception, were effective against 4 strains of streptococci. Streptococci were spread on washed and unwashed areas of palmar skin and more organisms were recovered from ether-washed areas than from unwashed or saline treated skin. The ether-soluble substance had definite bactericidal action on Streptococcus haemolyticus, Str. viridans and Clostridium diphtheriae, variable activity against Str. pneumoniae and staphylococci and no effect on Eberthella typhosa and Escherichia colt. Several kinds of extracts of hair were prepd. and the bactericidal action was considered to be due to long chain fatty acids and soaps. The inhibitory action of cystein and blood and the influence of u.-v. light on streptococcocidal effects were investigated. Expts. were also performed with certain organic acids and with lysozyme. Other properties of the skin fats were studied and discussed. The tabulated exptl. results are appended to the report.
