The introduction of all forms of particle-induced desorption methods for mass spectroscopic investigations of nonvolatile and thermally unstable biomolecules has had a strong impact on the field of mass spectrometry. These methods have only been used for about ten years. In the early 1970s it was considered difficult to get mass spectra even for small biomolecules like arginine. Proteins of molecular weights up to 25,000 can now be studied. The first of these methods that was introduced was 252Cf-Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry (PDMS) exploiting high-energy fast ions (ie, fission fragments) from a 252Cf-source to bombard solid samples. The method was reported for the first time in 1974 by Macfarlane and co-workers. The present review is intended to give a description of the development of this technique,
