Streptomycin, a new antibacterial substance, was isolated from 2 strains of an actinomyces related to Actinomyces griseus. It resembles streptothricin in its solubility in water, mode of isolation, selective activity against gram-negative bacteria, and limited toxicity to animals. The 2 substances differ in the nature of their respective bacteriostatic spectra as well as in their quantitative action upon different bacteria. It appears that one is dealing here with 2 closely related chemical compounds.
