Fig. 1. Polar diagram showing preferred orientations (diameters) and range of orientations (arcs) which gave a response from single neurons in the left visual cortex of kittens whose visual experience had been confined to vertical contours presented in the right hemifield. Immediately following the conditioning stimulation (C2) most cells were unresponsive (not illustrated, TaNe I), some cells had pre, erred orientations which matched that of the vertical grating used, while the remainder were complementary cells which responded over a wide range of orientations not including vertical. When recording was delayed following conditioning (C15) the proportion of unresponsive and complementary cells had declined and a large proportion responded vigorously over a narrow range of orientations matching the conditioning grating. Not shown are 4 units from C2 and 22 units from C15 whose preferred orientation was vertical but whose range of orientations was not determined accurately. procedure. The kitten, 3-5 weeks old (with one exception, C5, aged 13 weeks), raised in total darkness from the first week, was transferred from the dark room in a light-tight bag, anesthetized with Fluothane and positioned in front of a tangent screen at 57 cm. The left half of the screen was masked with a large sheet of dark card which curved around to the left side of the kitten's head to cover 80-90 of the left hemifield. The right side of the masking card was aligned with the zero vertical meridian of one eye with an accuracy of 2-3 provided by an ophthalmoscopic check of retinal landmarks. After relaxation with intravenous Flaxedil, anesthesia was main-
