The use of prosthetic materials in the abdominal wall and the abdominal and pelvic cavities began with the introduction of woven polypropylene meshes in the 1950s. 1 These materials are used when the surgeon wishes to avoid an additional fascial-harvesting procedure or when these materials are stronger than the patient’s own fascial tissue. 2General surgeons were the first to use synthetic meshes for the repair of abdominal wall hernias. 3, 4 Initially, care was taken to isolate the synthetic mesh from abdominal and pelvic organs, which limited the use of these synthetic materials. However, because of relatively “few” reported complications, meshes are now routinely being placed in contact with the abdominal and pelvic organs.
