Obesity is a growing health problem that has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, contributing to several disabling and life-threatening conditions. Surgery has proven to be the only treatment resulting in a sustained weight loss in morbidly obese patients and resolution of comorbid conditions. This article reviews the indications for obesity surgery and critically analyzes the benefits of several bariatric procedures.
