In the four years since the last review on plant tropisms [seeH.A., 20: 2211] progress has been relatively modest. In this review recent experiments and the resulting hypotheses on phototropism, geotropism and thermo-nasty are fully discussed. The author feels that recent work in this field shows a change in the basic concept of active plant movements in that, although the dependency of motion on auxin interaction is still stressed, the necessary differences in auxin concentration are considered to be brought about by the direct or indirect action of the stimulus, which causes an asymmetric destruction or formation of growth substances.
