Morphine 100 mg./kg- s.c. in mice produces a rigidity of the tail which is erected across the back in an S-shaped curve (Straub reaction); there is also excitability, extension of the limbs, voidance of faeces, and prominence of the perineum. It was abolished by general anaesthesia and by tubocurarine. Surgical procedures indicate that the phenomenon is produced mainly by the sacrococcygeus dorsalis muscle and that the lumbosacral cord with its peripheral outflow should be intact and these units should have an adequate circulation. This is in agreement with the electrophysiol. evidence of Leim-dorfer who suggested that morphine facilitated an increased activity in cerebro-spinal pathways.
