The orientations of the grains or crystals in a polycrystalline aggregate, ie the texture, are as important in determining the mechanical and physical properties of a material as are the other grain attributes, which are collectively termed the microstructure. There is a thriving international research community, mainly comprising materials scientists and geologists in the field of textures, there are international conference series in textures, and the importance of the subject to industry is well appreciated. However, over the years texture has received far less attention from the materials community than has microstructure, for several reasons.
