MethodsThe authors hypothesised that ibuprofen and morphine would provide better pain control compared with using either medication alone. To test this hypothesis, they recruited 501 children aged 6–17 years with mild-to-moderate musculoskeletal injuries on presentation to the emergency department. They randomly assigned participants to one of three study groups:(1) ibuprofen+ morphine,(2) ibuprofen alone and (3) morphine alone (the ibuprofen and morphine groups had appropriate placebos). The main outcome of interest was the proportion (%) of children in each of the three groups achieving a reduction of pain, as measured by the Visual Analogue Pain Scale (range 0–100 mm), to 30 mm or less at 60 min following administration of the study medication. This is an established way of measuring pain relief consistent with previous studies. 1 As expected, randomisation resulted in the three groups being equal at baseline with similar age and gender distribution, pain ratings and injury types.
