Mutual entrainment and desynchronization are peculiar phenomena in a population of limit cycle oscillators. For studying such systems phase models were used by several authors, r)-5) since the phase description of limit cycle oscillation is essential and simple enough to understand the mutual entrainment anddesynchronization in a number of discrete oscillators. But it is unsatisfactory to describe desynchronization in a continuum medium such as a reaction-diffusion system, because a simple continuum approximation of the phase model gives a diffusion equation or a Burgerstype equation and desynchronization cannot occur in such systems. We study a next-simplest model equation which describes both phase and amplitude motion. It is given by an equation of a complex variable W = X + iY in the one-dimensional space:
