Abstract The article profiles Osamu Hayaishi, professor at the University of Kyoto. Hayaishi uses the technique of enrichment culture of soil bacteria as a means to discover novel enzymes and pathways. He combined some tryptophan with a scraping of soil to observe the growth of bacteria which upon subculture yielded a pure strain.
