BACKGROUNDVast amounts of data have been collected over the past 20 to 30 years, and with increased computer processing power we can analyze larger volumes of data faster than we could only a few years ago. As will be discussed, in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), algorithms are applied to data and can then predict future outcomes via complex processes. AI has enormous potential to assist us in medicine, particularly when accessing and processing large volumes of data in order to address health crises. Footnote 2 AI is already having a significant impact in clinical diagnostics, cancer detection, and robotic surgery. Footnote 3 As clinicians, it is imperative that doctors and health care professionals become better informed about the science and applications of this technology. This will enable us to play a role in guiding pathways in development that ethically takes the future well-being and rights of humans, more particularly our patients, into account. As doctors, we have a duty of care to learn, to understand, to influence, and to ensure a safe future for our patients.
