During thc past dccade, brcast rcconstruction following mastectomy has become onc of the prime interests of plastic surgeons around the world. Two principal methods for reconstruction are presently available: those without additional skin and muscle flaps using prefabricated or cus-tom-designed implants, and thosc that add tissue such as the latissimus dorsi island myocutaneous flap, the latissimus dorsi muscle flap, the transverse upper abdominal flap, a pedicle flap of greater omentum, and microsurgical composite tissue transplantation." The temporary expander has been applied suc-cessfully in breast rcconstruction following radical mastectomy in various postmastectomy defects. In women with a favorable prognosis, the basic principle is the expansion of the remaining chest-wall skin to a larger than desirable size by a temporary expander, which is subsequently re-placed by a smaller implant.""
