METHODSFive male medical students were subjects for experi-ments conducted during October and November. None of the subjects had a history of events necessary for heat acclimatization(1). They refrained from food, but not water, for at least 6 hr preceding heat exposure. On reporting to the laboratory at approximately 5: 30 AM, fully clothed subjects reclined for 30 min at room temperature (25-27 C). After a venous blood sample was obtained, subjects disrobed, entered the heat chamber (43.3 C DB, 29 C WB), were weighed, and immediately began to exercise. Exercise consisted of stepping on and off a stool 0.3 m high at a rate sufficient to create a work load of 400-450 kg-m/min for the first 10 min of every half-hour of heat exposure. Between work periods subjects rested on a canvas cot. All experiments were run between 5: 30 AM and 10: 30 AM. Since blood samples were timed from initial pre-exposure rest period, there was a maximum difference of 30 min between times of day that samples were taken from one subject to another, though spacing of samples within each individual experiment was identical. Each subject underwent two heat exposures with a minimum of 1 week between exposures. Experimental variations were: Rehydration-ingestion of 300 g warm 0.1% saline (27) 30 min before weighing with additional weighed amounts of saline ingested immediately after subject weighing (once per hour) was used to maintain body weight; blood samples were taken prior to each water ingestion (30-min intervals). Dehydration-fluid ingestion was omitted during the experiments.
