The ocean covers 70.8% of the earth and has abundant organisms. These marine organisms likely have unique metabolic pathway and genetic backpund because of their varied living envimnment and long evolutionary history. Thus the potential of marine organisms to provide new bioactive products is enormous. These active products have been detected mostly in marine algae, starfish, echinus and especially frequently in sponges. Sponges are the most primitive ofthe multi-celled animals that have existed for 700-800 million years and there are approximately 15,000 sponge species. Sponges often have associated symbiosis with other organisms and have not been attacked by them. In the 195O’s, Ara-U was fist isolated from marine sponge as a lead antitumor compound and has led to the synthesis of an antitumor compound, Ara-C. During the last 20 years, numerous novel products have been isolated from marine sponges and many of these have shown pronounced biological activity. This review summarizes the natural active products derived fiom marine sponges with antitumor, antiviral and antibacterial activities and also the strategies for producing sponge biomass.
