IF A THIRD OF LIFE is passed in bed, with whom this time is spent is not a trivial matter. As ethnologists, we expect co-sleeping customs to be consonant with major interpersonal and emotional patterns of family life in a culture, and at the same time to reflect cross-cultural differences. 1 Westerners viewing Japanese sleeping arrangements usually sense a high degree of" overcrowding," which they say results from lack of space in" densely populated" Japan. We argue that this apparent" overcrowding" in the bedroom is only in part a function of lack of space: It derives more directly from the strength of family bonds. We argue further that the frequency with which children co-sleep with parents expresses a strong cultural emphasis upon the nurturant aspects of family life and a correlative de-emphasis of its sexual aspects. We support our arguments by asking, of data from urban families, who sleeps by whom?
