Tomato plants were grown in nutrient solns. containing eight different molar Ca/Sr ratios from 2/1 to 4000/1. The shoots and roots were then analysed for Ca and Sr using flame photometry and activation analysis, respectively. The shoots did not distinguish Sr from Ca, but the roots absorbed Sr preferentially at low concns. of this element. Ion exchange resins show a qualitatively similar effect. Analyses of barley and lucerne shoots from 5 soils con- taining different Ca/Sr ratios are also given. The interpretation of these analyses is complicated by the difficulty of measuring the available Ca/Sr in the soils used. Ammonium acetate extraction may give misleading results for the Ca/Sr ratios in the soil which are available to plants.
