The FAPP ventilating system used to maintain "disease-free" poultry flocks was adapted to brooding of broiler chicks. Day-old commercial broiler chicks have been brooded under FAPP conditions for 8 to 28 days before placement in the field in conventional housing with their hatchmate controls. Chickens brooded under FAPP conditions for 18 to 21 days had approximately 2% less total condemnations at slaughter compared to conventionally housed hatchmates. Most of this reduction was due to lower condemnations for leukosis which in broiler chickens is now considered almost entirely Marek's disease. If we eventually move toward an eradication program for Marek's disease and other airborne diseases of poultry the FAPP housing system will become one of our most useful tools.
