92 Note on the Inheritc~ nee of" Grossability" which I am indebted to Professor RH Biffen--a beardless vu, lgare--set 32 seeds out of 40 flowers fertilised with rye--or 80~ The seeds varied consider'ably in size and were all shrivelled. Sown in 1918, at Pergamino in Argentina, only three seeds germinated, giving three hybrid plants, all perfectly sterile--though it is very possible that had they not been so early flowering when there was very little pollen abouL they might have set some seed. In 1912," Shirno" and" Chinese" were crossed and the resulting 5 F1 plants grown in 1913 at Pergamino. The hybrid was in no way other than was expected fi'om such a cross. An ear of each of these plants was emasculated and crossed with rye. Three seeds resulted--all on separat e ears--but only one was viable, and it gave a sterile hybrid in 191~.
