Describes positron emission tomography (PET) and its application to studies of normal and abnormal memory function. PET is an analytic, noninvasive measurement tool for determining local cerebral function in humans. The measurement of functional brain responses with PET has been clearly demonstrated by the use of sensory, motor, and neurobehavioral stimulation paradigms in normal Ss. The study of pathophysiology in patients with cerebral disorders using PET has a number of distinctive advantages over evaluating such patients with imaging techniques that only demonstrate brain structure. Results of studies with dementia patients suggest a positive correlation between the severity of dementia and the reductions in glucose or oxygen metabolism of the brain as a whole. It is concluded that PET methods provide previously unobtainable information in humans and the potential to evaluate the relevancy and limits of accuracy of animal models in the study of memory systems.(53 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
