In the past few years, the results obtained with the X-ray satellites EXOSAT and GlNGA, combined with more ancient data from the EINSTEIN satellite (SSS and MPC), have greatly increased our knowledge of the spectroscopic properties of the intra-cluster medium. About 100 clusters have now been observed in X-ray spectroscopy, allowing detailed statistical studies. The GlNGA satellite has provided very precise estimates of the overall emission weighted temperature and iron abundance on a large sample of nearby clusters, some indication on the spatial distribution of these quantities and, for the first time, spectroscopic data on distant clusters (0.1 < z < 0.3). Spatially resolved spectral measurements are still scarce but increasing. These data have shed some light on long standing problems like the origin and enrichment of the intra-cluster medium, the energy content and heating of the gas, the formation and evolution of clusters and the cosmological parameters.
