According to Takubo (1989), when agents in the conversation refer to a particular object without a bare proper noun, then the agents generally have shared knowledge about the object. However, when agents do not have shared knowledge about an object, then they refer to the object without a bare proper noun. In these cases, the agents often use” N tte” or “N toiu.” However, a very small amount of actual data is available to support this theory. In this study, we analyzed what kind of expressions are used when agents in conversations refer to un-shared objects introduced in the middle of conversations using the Japanese Map Task Dialogue Corpus. We discuss the relationship between the speakers’ beliefs about shared knowledge and linguistic expressions.
