ABSTRACT This article reappraises the potential of realism with respect to the representation of climate change through an analysis of the figure of the flood in what I term Anthropocene water fictions. The article draws on Amitav Ghosh’s nonfictional The Great Derangement (2016) together with his novels The Hungry Tide (2004) and Gun Island (2019), published before and after The Great Derangement, respectively. I argue that through their development of an aquatic language and diluvian imagery, Anthropocene water fictions challenge the limitations of realism that Ghosh identifies in The Great Derangement.
