The Mesozoic-Cenozoic extensional tectonic system in eastern China is composed of rift basins and extensional mountain system. There are three typical couples: Songliao rift basin and Great Xing'an mountains in the northern part, the North China rift basin and the Taihang mountains in the middle, and the Jianghan rift basin and the Xuefeng Mountains in the southern area. The underplating, convecting, and delamination are the three major mechanisms in the continental rifting and extensional geodynamic system. The coupling of rift basin and extensional mountain system is the effect of evolution of the interaction of crust mantle boundary.
