N-Acetyl-L-aspartic acid is not metabolically inert as previously thought but will provide acetyl groups for brain lipid synthesis in vivo. Double label experiments show that it is the L form of the acetylated amino acid which is utilized; a comparison with double labelled acetate shows that the acetyl groups enter similar pools.
