It has been estimated that about one third of the world's potential food crops are destroyed by a wide selection of pests before they reach the moment of harvesting. COPR undertakes research both in Britain and overseas to help countries combat their pest problems. The countries to which the Centre addresses its attention are the developing countries in the tropics and subtropics. The damage done by the vast range of pests may not only put a nation's food supply at risk but also cause starvation and misery to subsistence farmers. This problem is made more serious by the fact that a large proportion of the world's subsistence farmers live in the tropics and subtropics where the rainfall so vital to crop production is unreliable. The welfare of the subsistence farmer not only depends upon the success of his crops but also upon his health so the Centre also seeks to improve public health by the control of the vectors that spread diseases. It should be stressed, however, that despite its role in the field of public health the Centre is not a medical institution.
