A new vision, involving the use of magnetic fields to engineer grain boundaries, is proposed on the basis of recent observations. It is shown that the properties associated with grain boundaries can be manipulated by applying magnetic fields during processing, so as to enhance the bulk properties of metallic alloys and nanocrystalline materials.
