Initial experiments indicated that the direct reaction of sulfuryl chloride with phenols in the presence of an acid acceptor was not sufficiently free of side reactions to be a useful polymer-forming reaction under the conditions tried. Reaction of sulfuryl chloride with bisphenol A to form the bischlorosulfate (11) and subsequent condensation of the bischlorosulfate with bisphenol A were then studied separately.
