An analysis of controlled ventilation, based on a linear, 1st-order model of the respiratory system has been performed. Different pressure waveforms are used as the driving source for the model of the ventilator. The respiratory system is represented by an electrical-circuit analogue with parameters that are representative of an adult patient. Optimal parameter settings for the ventilator are predicted, which would minimise the deleterious side effects of positive-pressure ventilation and constrain the ventilatory work done on the patient within the permissible limit. The system constraints are included through an exterior penalty factor and a nonlinear optimisation technique is used. The optimal input-pressure waveform is decided on the basis of the average and peak values of the alveolar pressures and the inspiratory time period.
