In designing a vacuum equipment such as Vacuum Interrupters (VIs), it is one of the important factors to grasp the characteristics of surface flashover in vacuum, which occurs via charging of the insulator. In this study, we measured the charge distribution characteristics inside a bottle type insulator as the model insulator of VI after the AC voltage application. This insulator has shield rings (shields) at both ends of the insulator to mitigate the electric field near the triple junctions (TJ) and we investigated a relationship between configurations of the shield and the charge distributions. As a result, when AC voltage was similarly applied three times to the same sample, the maximum values of surface charge in the second and the third applications were gradually reduced due to conditioning effect, compared with that of the first one. The reduction rate of charging of a sample with narrow clearance between the shield and insulator was higher than that with wide clearances.
