This study examines the effects that laccase, an enzyme which targets wood lignin, has on the refinability, and consequently the papermaking properties, of a radiata pine mechanical pulp. The results indicate that impregnation of radiata pine woodchips with a laccase preparation could reduce refining energy consumption, by as much as ∼5 to 8%, in the generation of mechanical pulp furnishes. These energy savings were attained with little alteration to the optical properties of the furnishes generated. Furthermore, there was a general increase in the strength of the handsheets produced, as indicated by the enhanced tear-tensile relationship. It was also apparent that sheets formed by a dynamic former (exhibiting fibre orientation) were less susceptible to the strength reductions commonly observed during the calendering process. All of the observed modifications were attained without any yield loss. The observed improvements suggest that further consideration should be given to the use of laccase for the processing of mechanical pulps. For example, it may be possible to use less kraft reinforcing pulp fibres during the manufacture of certain paper grades predominantly composed of mechanical furnishes, such as newsprint and directory papers, as these enzymatically-generated fibres seemed to demonstrated enhanced interfibre bonding capacities.
