The alpha-subunit of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDHa) decarboxylates pyruvate and is the rate-limiting step in the PDH-complex reaction sequence. Using different phosphorylation conditions which inhibit PDHa-kinase of PDHa-phosphatase, we demonstrate that PDHa in brain is regulated by a phosphorylation (inactivation) - dephosphorylation (activation) cycle.
