This paper reports a Guttman scale of functional health of the aged developed from social research interview.data. Although based on respondents'' judgments, the 6 scale items rely on objective referents of people''s activity and specific functional capacity. The particular scale components ordered respondents in a fairly flat distribution on this health continuum and met the formal criteria of a satisfactory Guttman scale. Item error varied between 4% and 12%. Coefficient of Reproductbility = .91, extremely high for a 6 item instrument. There is no indication that original question sequence artificially reduced error and raised reproducibility.
