'By incorporating symmetric interdependency into linear demands, this note shows that monopolistic third-degree price discrimination can improve social welfare even if total output remains the same, a result that counters one of the main results presented in Layson (this Journal, 1998). It is also shown that this positive change in social welfare benefits the monopoly side but that consumers' surplus decreases as a whole.'
