Writing about his aims in the drab days immediately after the second world war James Drawbell (1968, p 45), the then editor of Woman’s Own maintained that he wanted to provide a magazine with &dquo;colour, entertainment, escape (yes escape!)&dquo;. Mary Grieve (1964, p 179), Woman’s long-time editor wrote in her autobiography that &dquo; The one factor which above all others distinguishes the women’s press from newspapers and general magazines, is that they are got together with the specific intention of pleasing the reader&dquo;. The editors of the monthly She saw their function &dquo;as entertaining and informing women&dquo; (White 1977, p 51). Of Vogue, Beatrlx Miller, the magazine’s editor in 1976 commented that &dquo;I suppose we are 60 per cent selling a dream and 40 per cent offering practical advice&dquo; (Menkes 1976, p 6). Deldre McSharry writing her Cosmopolitan editorial in November 1973 reckoned that, &dquo; Our feeling at Cosmo is that we can afford to infuriate you but we must never, ever bore you&dquo; and urges, &dquo;Thirty days hath November .... enjoy every one&dquo;, and in the first issue of the glossy monthly Options the editor, Penny Radford, declared &dquo; We want Options to be a lot of information, a lot of help and a lot of fun, so enjoy it&dquo;.
