Clinical studies (e.g. Hardy & Wakely, 1962; Pandit & Dundee, 1970) have emphasized the amnesic properties of hyoscine in routine anaesthetic practice. In a previous experiment (Crow & Grove-White, 1973) we demonstrated that hyoscine impairs performance on a simple verbal learning task to a greater extent at longer (e.g. 5-60 s) than at shorter (e.g. less than 5 s) intervals before recall, and that this impairment is selective to a learning as compared to a scanning task. In the present experiments we have examined whether this action distinguishes hyoscine from other classes of central depressant drug. Eight male subjects (age 19-23 years) were given a scanning task, and a free-recall learning test, with an immediate and delayed component, after various drug treatments given i.v. on each of five occasions.
