Literature has demonstrated the importance of both parents' care in children's development. Legal frameworks also have promised children a full enjoyment of their rights. However, in some countries these frameworks better apply for children born, living and recognized within heterosexual legally married couples. This paper aimed to examine the life conditions of children born in consensual unions within patriarchal context, whose paternity is denied or doubted.Data were collected in three districts in the City of Kigali and provinces in Rwanda. One hundred and six individual interviews and eleven focus group discussions were conducted with women and men in consensual unions, local leaders and the staff of civil society organizations. This was a qualitative descriptive study that has used purposive sampling technique and thematic analysis method. The results reveal that paternity is easily denied for children born in consensual unions. Victims of this denial are prevented paternal and family care. The use of legal framework to reestablish these children takes long and is sometimes unaffordable. The situation is complicated by patriarchal system supposing that the man is the provider of the family whereas women and children are made dependent.Paternity denial in consensual unions is common and has negative consequences on children's life conditions in patriarchal setting, which is an appeal to policy makers to do justice to these children.
