The book comprises a collection of 40 individual papers and covers the anatomy and physiology of gonadal development from genital ridge to puberty. In terms of lay-out, little has been added to these papers in the way of editorial embellishment. There is a brief foreword describing the general organization and conclusions of the meeting, and this is followed immediately by the scientific papers. The subject matter of this book is so fascinating that an introductory chapter summarizing the general features of gonadal development might have rendered the ensuing material more accessible to biologists or biochemists not directly involved in the field. As it stands, this book is primarily intended for the developmental biologist committed to this area of research.The scientists contributing to this symposium are clearly at the forefront of the field and represent a distinguished international line-up of expertise. Considering that more than half of the contributors were not from English-speaking countries, the editors have done an excellent job in maintaining a high standard of text, even though occasional errors, such as the molecular weight quoted for HY antigen on page 241, have crept in. Clearly, if every one of the participants was expected to contribute a chapter to the book, costs could only be kept within reasonable limits ($74.50!) if the papers were short. As a consequence, one is consistently led to the reference lists at the end of each chapter to pursue an interesting story, only to find the most truncated form of bibliography imaginable. If the
