The autoradiographic labeling patterns for DNA synthesis after a 15 min pulse of3H-thymidine show that the cell life cycles for mouse embryos between the two- and 16-cell stages lack a G1 period. During morulae and blastocyst stages 80 % of the cells are labeled by a 15 min pulse of3H-thymidine, demonstrating that the GI period is very short and possibly absent during these later stages of development. Subsequent to the two-cell stage, the G2 period is very short.
