Results.-In STs started from inocula containing only h-, the h+ increased until after about 15 to 20 transfers (100 to 140 generations) an equilibrium ratio of about 1 h+ per 106 h-was obtained as shown in figure 1 (A). When STs were started with various initial h+/h-ratios ranging from less than 1 h+ to about 100 h+ per 106 h-, the equilibrium was reached eventually, as shown in figure 2.
