Diamond tools have been wildly used in the construction and demolition of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, though the interaction between diamond tools and RC components is seldom studied. To find out the influence of heterogeneity on the grinding of RC by diamond cutter, RC samples with granite, rebar and rubber as reinforced material (RM) respectively and impregnated diamond cutters (IDCs) were prepared to carry out grinding tests. The grinding characteristics of RC samples were measured by a laser scanning confocal microscopy, while the morphologies of grinding debris and wear surfaces of IDCs were observed by SEM. Test results indicate that the grinding depths and grinding debris of cement and RMs are different from each other due to their distinct physical and mechanical properties, and the heterogeneity of RC samples will cause IDC to bounce or lean forward, changing the grinding process from a constant status. Ranked in descending order, the grinding depths of the four materials are rebar, granite, cement and rubber. Additionally, grinding debris plays an important role on the wear of IDC, and the main wear mechanism of IDC matrix is abrasive wear, namely, micro-cutting and grinding caused by hard debris, re-ground brittle debris and soft debris respectively.
