N1N,'-decamethylene-N4N4'-decamethylene-bis-4aminochinaldinium diacetate (Salvizol), a chemotherapeutic and bactericidic compound (Merck Index, 8th ed, 1968) has been found, similar to EDTA, effective for chemomechanical preparation of root canals (KAUFMAN, IADR abstract). In the present study, the solubility rate of dentin powder in Salvizol is compared with that in EDTA. The subsequent solubility of the treated dentin was studied in acid and compared to that of dentin pretreated with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Thirty mg aliquots of pulverized dentin (100 mesh) were exposed to 5 ml of Salvizol (0.5%, pH = 4.7), EDTA (0.5%, pH = 6.8), saline (pH = 6.8), deionized water (pH -5.1) and SLS (0.5%, pH = 6.6) for 1, 2, 18 and 30 hours at room temperature. After drawing off the supernatant liquid, the treated dentin was washed 3 times with 3 ml deionized water, dried at 90 C and weighed. 10-mg aliquots of the
