In an experimental study of the dark adaptation of 240 subjects ranging in age from 16 through 89 years, it was found that the intercorrelations among 20 dark adaptation thresholds ranged between 0.79 and 0.99. The transition point between cone and rod thresholds at the 5th min. correlated 0.79 with the thresholds at the 40th min. At the 2d min. of dark adaptation, the youngest subjects were 5 times more sensitive to the test stimulus than were the oldest subjects. By the 40th min. of dark adaptation, the youngest subjects were 239 times more sensitive than the oldest subjects. Thus, the influence of age upon dark adaptation sensitivity is very marked.
