The term calcifying odontogenic cyst was first used by Gorlin et al’in 1962 to describe a new cystic entity with a peculiar pathogenesis and histologic features. In 1971’and again in 1992, the World Health Organization listed this entity and described it asA non-neoplastic cystic lesion in which the epithelial lining shows a well defined basal ayer of columnar cells, an overlying layer that is often many cells thick that may resemble stellate reticulum, and masses of ghost epithelial cells that may be in the epithelial cyst lining or in the fibrous capsule. The ghost epithelial cells may become calcified. Dysplastic dentin may be laid down next to the basal cell layer of epithelium.
