Data are reported on changes in total peroxidase activity and peroxidase isoenzyme patterns occurring in the abscission zone of Shamouti orange leaves and in adjacent tissues before and during leaf separation in the presence of applied IAA and ethylene. There was a close correlation between increase in peroxidase activity and the time course of abscission in untreated controls, and also in leaves where the retarding (IAA) and accelerating (ethylene) growth regulators were applied; peroxidase activity was higher in the abscission zone than in adjacent tissues in all treatments. The 2 growth regulators affected isoenzyme levels in opposite directions but had no qualitative effects on them.
